Shining a Light on Black History: How Companies Honor Black History Month

Written by Amy Franz

As Black History Month comes to a close, it’s as imperative as ever to strategize how your company is going to celebrate African Americans of past and present year round.

During the month of February, it has become customary for companies and brands to shine a light on African Americans and the Black experience. This year, Target spoke to three of their employees to highlight what being Black means to them and how they support the African American community every day.

On Etsy, if you type “Black History Month” in the search bar, you can find celebratory t-shirts and accessories. Etsy makes it just as simple to ensure you’re supporting a black owned business; all you have to do is type “Black owned” into the search bar and you will get thousands of results for Black vendors on the site.

Forbes also lays out four ways that your company can continually support the African American community:

  1. Hire Black speakers

  2. Amplify Black voices

  3. Partner with Black-owned companies

  4. Support a charity focused on racial justice
