Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Lin-Manuel Miranda

Written by Jessica Wilhoit

Mid-September starts Hispanic Heritage Month, which is from September 15th to October 15th. Established as a month long celebration in 1988, the celebratory month includes dates in September and October in order to encompass multiple Hispanic countries Independence Days, according to the National Museum of the American Latino. This year Hispanic Heritage Month comes just after Hamilton’s 10-year anniversary on Broadway and the release of Lin-Manuel Miranda: The Education of an Artist (a biography written by Daniel Pollack-Pelzner with a release date of September 9th).

Lin-Manuel Miranda, a New Yorker born to Puerto Rican parents, is a talented Pulitzer Prize winner who is an Oscar away from an EGOT. He created In the Heights to showcase the Latino neighborhood he himself grew up just north of. Hamilton tells a story of a “relentless” Alexander Hamilton which mirrors the “relentlessness” of hard working immigrants creating a new life for themselves. Lin-Manuel Miranda has created productions that showcase the LatinX community and highlight people of color on the stage. His work showcases the lasting impact of the Hispanic community on the United States.

The Hispanic Community is the largest minority in the United States at 19.5% of the population, according to the US Census Bureau.
